DIGITPORTS: Digital Twin Applications for Safer and Greener Adriatic Ports Operations

The DIGITPORTS project, under the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021-2027 program, is a major digitalization effort aimed at modernizing the Adriatic port network through advanced “Digital Twin” technology. With a total project budget of €2,384,226, DIGITPORTS is focused on implementing virtual modeling technologies across key Adriatic ports, including Venice, Trieste, Rijeka, Zadar, and Split. These digital twins replicate the real-time conditions within port environments, supporting efficient resource management, enhancing safety, reducing emissions, and optimizing port operations. A substantial portion of the project budget is allocated to pilot initiatives, technology trials, and strengthening cross-border collaboration to unify digital standards among Adriatic ports.

Port of Split Authority’s Role and Budget Allocation

As a prominent partner in DIGITPORTS, the Port of Split Authority (PSA) has an allocated budget of €350,376 to contribute to several core project initiatives:

  • Leading Work Package 3 (WP3): The Port of Split Authority heads WP3, responsible for crafting an action plan that sets guidelines and strategies for digital implementation across Adriatic ports. This involves assessing best practices and establishing scalable digitalization frameworks that align with European standards.
  • City Port Basin Pilot Project: The PSA’s budget also funds a Digital Twin pilot project within the City Port Basin, a high-traffic area. This pilot leverages machine learning, Bluetooth sensors, and surveillance cameras to monitor berth occupancy in real-time, optimizing berth management for ferries and passenger vessels.
  • Technical Feasibility Study: Part of the budget will support a technical study evaluating technologies like LoRaWAN, RFID, and AI-enhanced surveillance. This study aims to select the most effective digital tools for Split’s unique port needs, ensuring tailored solutions.
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): PSA will collaborate with other DIGITPORTS partners to sign an MoU, committing to ongoing cross-border digitalization efforts beyond the project’s lifecycle, which will help sustain DIGITPORTS’ advancements across the Adriatic region.

The Port of Split Authority’s leadership within DIGITPORTS ensures it plays a key role in advancing sustainable, smart port operations in the Adriatic, solidifying its status as a pioneer in regional digitalization efforts.
