Free zone

Thanks to its geographic position, hinterland and large number of inhabited islands in the coastal area, Port of Split has always been oriented to passenger and cargo traffic. In the passenger traffic, Port of Split is now ranked as the first in Croatia, and in cargo traffic it takes third place, after Rijeka and Ploče.

Convenient position of the Port of Split in the Adriatic Sea, which is semi-enclosed sea extending in the very heart of Europe, has led to the development of traffic infrastructure towards Split.

Due to above noted significance of the Port of Split, traffic position and the guidelines on traffic development, then in force, in 1988 was established the Customs Zone Split.

For the purpose of development of business operations and investments in the Port of Split infrastructure, conditioned by tax and customs incentives regulated by Free Zones Act, Port Authority Split has adjusted existing Customs Zones with the Law, by establishing Port of Split Free Zone.

Croatian Government, at the session held on December 10, 1998 adopted Decision on granting the consent to Port Authority Split for establishment of Port of Split Free Zone. According to Decree dated December 4, 2000 issued by Ministry of Economy on fulfilment of terms for the commencement of the activity of Port of Split Free Zone, we started the operations on January 1, 2001.

Port of Split Free Zone comprises the part of land and sea segment of dock area of the Port of Split. The area of Free Zone is situated within dock area of Vranjic-Solin basin, consisting of two parts:

  • land part – comprises area from cape Stinice to the borders of k.o. Split – k.o. Solin, surface 259.900 m2
  • sea part – surface 24.000 m2

In the Free Zone, as prescribed by Free Zones Act (OG 44/96, 78/99, 127/00, 92/05, 85/08, 148/13) may be performed the following activities:

  • production of goods
  • refinement of goods
  • storage of goods
  • wholesale trade
  • strategic activities of business support
  • activities of establishment of technological development-innovation centres
  • provision of services, with the exception of banking and other financial transactions and services of insurance and reinsurance of properties and persons
