Project DESCRIPTION:
SUSPORT is an EU project funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia programme whose main objective is to increase the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of ports in the programme area through stronger institutional cooperation, laying the foundations for coordinated and lasting cross-border governance of port environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. Ports in the programme area will be able to exchange best practices and develop joint methodologies for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, which will be tested in the project's pilot activities. Ports in the programme area have no common model for environmental and energy-efficiency planning and therefore adopt mitigation measures in an uncoordinated way, with uneven results in terms of environmental protection. The SUSPORT partners intend to strengthen the institutional capacity and cross-border governance of programme-area ports in this sector, increasing the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of maritime transport, which is the most sustainable way of transporting goods from both an environmental and an energy point of view. By strengthening institutional capacity and cross-border governance for planning the reduction of environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions among all ports in the programme area, the partners will create a long-term cross-border institutional platform for exchanging knowledge and best practice, while supporting competitiveness through better connectivity and integration with the TEN-T corridor and greater cross-border cohesion and cooperation. Five Croatian port authorities – Zadar, Split, Ploče, Dubrovnik and Rijeka – together with Dubrovnik-Neretva County and the Intermodal Transport Cluster are the Croatian partners in the project.

The main expected result of SUSPORT is stronger institutional capacity of programme-area ports regarding the key issues of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The project will achieve the following specific results:

  1. Improved port competences in joint planning of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, as a key condition for long-term change. Sharing experience and analysing best practice will give staff of all programme-area ports a knowledge base for improving their own planning skills.
  2. Harmonised policies to strengthen the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of ports at cross-border level. A joint model plan for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency will be the basis for standardising environmental protection measures.
  3. Institutionalised cross-border governance of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. By creating a permanent cross-border institutional platform through the signing of a joint protocol, all programme-area ports will commit to applying a common strategy on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in the long term, beyond the end of the project.
