The Port of Split Free Zone within the Vranjic-Solin Basin — tax and customs benefits for the manufacture, processing and storage of goods.
Today the Port of Split ranks first in Croatia for passenger traffic and third for cargo traffic — just behind the ports of Rijeka and Ploče.
Thanks to its geographical position, its hinterland and the large number of inhabited islands along the coast, the Port of Split has always focused on passenger and cargo traffic. The port's favourable position on the Adriatic, which reaches deep into the heart of Europe, has influenced the development of transport infrastructure towards Split.
Because of this importance, its location in the transport network and the transport development guidelines of the time, the Split Customs Zone was established in 1988. To develop business and investment in port infrastructure — driven by the tax and customs benefits provided by the Zakon o slobodnim zonama (Free Zones Act) — the Port of Split Authority brought the existing customs zones into line with the Act by establishing the Port of Split Free Zone.
The Split Customs Zone was established in response to the port's importance and location in the transport network.
The Government of the Republic of Croatia adopted a decision approving the establishment of the Port of Split Free Zone by the Port of Split Authority.
A decision of the Ministry of Economy confirmed that the conditions for the Port of Split Free Zone to begin operating had been met.
