Upgrading the infrastructure of the Port of Split and introducing the EcoPort environmental management system.
Extension and upgrade of the passenger berths on the outer side of the breakwater in the City Port of Split.
Around 5 million passengers and 730,000 cars pass through the Port of Split every year, with domestic and international traffic growing steadily. This led to a shortage of infrastructure and superstructure facilities for handling regular traffic, so the Port of Split Authority launched the Port of Split Infrastructure Upgrade Project.
Extending the passenger berths on the outer side of the breakwater directly increases the capacity of the City Port — for both land and sea traffic. Two berths have been built to accommodate ships in domestic and international passenger and vehicle traffic as well as cruise ships, providing a larger operational area, smoother traffic flow and greater traffic safety.
Construction of berths began on the outer side of the breakwater in the City Port of Split; the works were divided into two phases.
The first phase of the extension and upgrade of the passenger berths was completed.
The second phase was completed — two new berths were put into operation.
Given the construction of new facilities in the port, modern environmental requirements and the specific features of the area managed by the Port of Split Authority — six separate locations (basins), the state of the environment and administrative responsibilities (the concession system, a large number of concession holders and interested public bodies) — there was a need to formalise and standardise environmental management in line with EcoPort (ESPO) principles.
The environmental management system based on ESPO principles (EcoPort EMS) brings together quality and environmental management, environmental action plans and the preparation of management documents, and is open to all partners and the community. EcoPort reflects the close interconnection between development, environmental protection and a management system founded on the principles of sustainable development — a process that enables all stakeholders to participate actively in, influence and oversee the procedures.
